What inspired you to become a trainer/instructor?
Throughout my entire life I have always been involved in sports. I played high school and college baseball in Nebraska before finishing my Exercise and Wellness degree at Arizona State University. It was not until college that I started to workout individually and I was amazed at the transformations my body went through. From that point on I devolved a desire to help others reach their goals and loved being surrounded by fitness.
Where do you train/teach?
Currently I am a fitness instructor at Orangetheory Fitness in Paradise Valley. I have been training at this location for just over a year now. In addition, I am a PE coach at an elementary school in Scottsdale.
What inspires you most about your clients?
I have been fortunate enough to have some amazing people come through Orangetheory. What inspires me most about my clients is their persistence and drive. Once a goal is reached, a new one is set and they are relentless. I am constantly reminding them, “it never gets easier, you just get stronger.”
What is your advice for someone looking to get started on a better diet and/or fitness plan?
Nothing is going to happen over night. Instead over overhauling your diet or fitness plan in one day, take gradual steps like eliminating sugar and/or exercising at least 30 minutes/3 days a week to get you on the right path.
What are some of the motivational tools you use in your life each day to stay healthy?
As cliché as it may sound I use others to motivate me. People that don’t believe in you are often the ones that help you reach your goals. Also, being a former athlete I have the desire to stay in shape and always be somewhat athletic.
What is your favorite workout at the moment?
The Orangetheory workout! Of course I am a little bias, but I truly believe the OTF workout is one of the best in the country. I say this because it is so time-efficient and effective. The heart rate based interval training for cardio is unrivaled and the resistance portion of the 1-hour workout keeps me athletic and toned!
If you could work with ANYONE in the world who would it be?
If I could workout with anyone I would workout with Curtis James aka 50 cent! Not only is he extremely in shape but I really like his approach to fitness. So often people fall under the misconception that results only come from extreme movements and exercises. Curtis has achieved his goals through sound nutrition and basic movements/lifts such as push-ups and dead-lifts.
What are your hobbies?
Amongst my favorite hobbies are motorcycles and snowboarding. The feeling of freedom that snowboarding gives me is amazing. In addition, it is a killer lower body/core workout!
It’s Friday night, your best friends are all ready to meet you out and you don’t have to work tomorrow, where are you going and what are you doing?
I would be going out! My friends are awesome and I always have a blast with them. But I have to admit, I would probably take it easy Friday night so I could look forward to a killer workout on my day off!
