Every once in a while there are three different people that come together in perfect unison, last night at 630 in the evening on the Upper West Side location of Flywheel Sports, that is exactly what happened. When I heard that three massive superstars – so different in style – but beautifully unified in skill, inspiration and motivation were teaching the Fly 90 AKA a 90 minute, three instructor spin class, I JUMPED at the chance to get in this class.
Danielle Devine, Ryan Makely & Jesse Alexander make one intense and badass workout team.
Danielle easily inspires everyone she meets. Her smile can light up a room, but get in a spin room with her and that smile turns into a beast mode face of determination and motivation! Music ranging from Mumford and Sons to Jay-Z she can push you through each song making you give your all… and then helping you find a bit more.
Ryan is an instructor like no other. His realness and absolute zest for life comes through in every single pedal stroke. You can tell he loves what he does because you don’t ever leave a class of his without feeling not only better about yourself because of your ride, but better about your ride because of yourself. He gives an invaluable energy and passion to the sport and his classes push you to the limit… though my favorite might be when he tells you to do tap backs like there’s a hotiie behind you and to drop it like it’s HOT!
With Jesse you feel a different and amazing energy the moment you walk into the room and it stays with you throughout the day. His different style of motivating and pumping up the room is something that is equated with the fundamentals of fitness as I know it – strength in numbers. It comes down to getting the energy and power from the room and the bikers around you and Jesse inspires that energy to come out, reach your other bike-mates and, also, transfer it into a fierce and intense ride for yourself.
So, needless to say the energy in this room was beyond electric. Everyone in that room was ready for battle (the “war paint” Ryan gave us helped), everyone was ready for an amazing ride and that was EXACTLY what they gave us.
The ride started with Jesse and Ryan at the front of the room and they exploded into the ride, starting with a sprint to 105 almost immediately. There was no turning back and everyone was ready. There is no doubt about it, just because it was a 90 minute ride, these instructors were not “going easy”.
After class I heard more “Oh my God that was the best ride ever” than I EVER had before.
For me, just knowing that I have the capability to take and conquer a 90 minute class is amazing and something to be proud of.
Every single person in that class, people I know, people who seemed familiar and people I’ve never seen before were part of getting me through it. There is something about looking around a Flywheel room, seeing everyone move together, listening to the sound of the bike under the pulsating music that just keeps you going. It was a joint effort on a single bike and I couldn’t be happier or more thankful to have people like Danielle, Ryan and Jesse in my fit world!
Word on the street is PART TWO is coming in March… NOT. TO. BE. MISSED.
