The app of all apps… yes, I realize that this is a rather large statement to make, but it is true. There is something to say about all of the incredible and amazing fitness and health apps that are out there. There are ones that can track everything from the amount of food you intake to how many pushups you do a day to, literally, taking you through a full workout while tracking your calories; many of these are absolutely PHENOMENAL. However, the truth is, when you’re talking about the whole package – the entire mind, body and spirit – many of these apps can only help you with either working out out harder or eating better, but not your mental well being. For me, if my mind isn’t clean, if I am not able to take time, relax and center myself, then all the other things tend to not work to their highest potential. When I am working out, it is not only about getting through a class, it is about getting through a class strategically and strongly. Making sure that I am doing everything to the best of my ability and having a clear mind is key for that. When I want to make healthier food choices, if I’m stressed out or tired, I don’t make the best choices and then that only adds to my stress or exhaustion. So, one of the incredible ways that I have been able to get better rest, clear my mind and, therefor, be more productive in my work, food and fitness life is, as I said earlier, the app of all apps. Headspace. Headspace is an empowering and brilliant mental workout. It is a tool that can give you awesome exercises and skills that are necessary to manage cravings, stress and anxiety. These are all things that easily get in the way of us working toward our health goals. I can’t tell you how important de-stressing and good rest are to your overall health.
Headspace was founded by ex-Buddhist monk, Andy Puddicombe, and creative, Rich Pierson in 2010. I unfortunately only found it a few months ago, but so thrilled I did. They call it a gym membership for the mind and I love that so much. Their fans include athletes like Etienne Stott (badass London 2012 gold medalist) & super health fanatic celebs such as the lovely Gwyneth Paltrow.
For me, all of that is very cool, but what matters most is the knowledge that my mind is my number one top fitness partner. So, yes, other fitness apps are incredible, but I promise you, if you download this app and use it, really use it, you will be able to utilize all the other fit apps and, even your moment to moment life, better.
