The Benefits of Walking

For something so beneficial, walking is overlooked too often. Walking is a gentle exercise that is low-impact, but rewarding all the same. The positive effects of fitting a walk – and some fresh air – into your daily routine are seemingly endless. From deflecting disease to boosting creativity, incorporating walking into your fitness journey can make all of the difference in your success along the way.

Walking has been proven to combat diabetes, which is one of the leading causes of death in the USA. A brisk walk improves insulin sensitivity which in turn improves a person’s chances of beating the disease. Women who walk regularly have reportedly better sexual satisfaction and desire (and that can certainly burn a few extra calories!). The symptoms of fibromyalgia , a painful condition that affects about 2% of the population, can be eased through walking. Taking frequent walks after a diagnosis of breast cancer gives women a 45% greater chance of survival than less active women. A stroll through the park can even reduce the risk of stroke. But walking offers more than physical benefits. Studies have shown that walking can reduce the risk of dementia and increase mental clarity and enhance creativity.

Even a quick walk around the block can get your blood circulating, remove brain fog, and tone muscles without much effort. You’ll enhance your mood and your overall fitness by incorporating this simple measure into your daily routine. So the next time you’re feeling sluggish or need to jumpstart your physical energy, just get some air!
