Lindsey McMeen / FJ Spotlight

Lindsey McMeen is an incredible, strong and beautiful woman; something you learn within moments of meeting her. After actually spending time with her, you get to know she is also kindhearted, determined and has an incredible desire to not only dream, but to put her dreams into action and truly follow them.  We met on a ski trip in VT and were introduced by a friend who said “oh, this is who I’ve been wanting you to meet”  within minutes we were on the couch talking fitness and our passions for healthy living.  Fitness love at first site.  It is so my pleasure to spotlight the badass and beautiful Lindsey McMeen.

What inspired you to become a trainer/instructor?

Fit-Journey-Lindsey-McMeen-2I am someone who needs to help other people, in any capacity, it’s ingrained in me. My love for health and fitness has always been there but as of the last year it has grown into more than that. My passion for helping people reach their health and fitness goals has taken over my life in the best way possible. Watching my client’s transformations, both externally and internally, is the most inspiring element of it all. Their changes, their happiness, their lives all moving in such a positive direction inspires me to be a better trainer and a better person. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Where do you train/teach?

Ilovekickboxing.com in NYC on 43rd St and 2nd Ave

If this is your second career, what made you make the career change?

Last summer I sat down with my brother in law to ask his opinion on what direction my life should go career-wise. He asked me to tell him three things that I love…I said: helping people, eating and being active/working out. All he said was, “there’s your answer…you need to be working in the health and fitness world.” He could not have been more right. I am just now leaving my “9-5” job to go full time health and fitness and I could not be more excited about it! Being able to do what I love all day, every day will be incredible. Being unhappy in your day to day life at your job is not worth it – making the change to do something you are passionate about is necessary. I cannot wait to see where I will go from here!

What inspires you most about your clients?

Their drive and spirit. It is incredible to behold.

What do you love most about your job?

Honestly, it is seeing the emotional and psychological change in my clients. Their physical change is amazing, there is no arguing that, but I love seeing how a person’s happiness and complete outlook on life is affected by their weight loss and lifestyle changes. Seeing that pure, joyful, ear-to-ear smile that wasn’t there when they walked in your door makes every sweat and tear worth it, for both of us.

What is your advice for someone looking to get started on a better diet and/or fitness plan?

First of all, that is amazing! You already took the first step, congrats! I would suggest doing a good amount of research to find a personal trainer and/or nutrition counselor/RD that you can trust who is training individuals like yourself. Think about who you are as a person and what your needs are and find someone who has experience working with people who are similar. Finding an activity that you love, love, love to do is also a great start. Whether it is spinning, running, yoga, power walking, or anything else, you will do it more if you truly enjoy it. Trust in yourself, too. You are who will make this happen for yourself, trust in your ability to make and meet those goals – you are worth it!

What is your favorite workout at the moment?

I know it is incredibly basic but I cannot get enough squats in my life. Not just for myself – what a difference they make! – but for my clients. The minute I amped up the squats they all noticed their legs leaning and toning. Such a basic workout, but an incredibly powerful one.

Do you enjoy working out inside or outside more?

Definitely outside – there is something to using your environment to make your workout more challenging. I love to create my own bootcamp style workouts in Central Park using the stairs, benches, sand volleyball pits, anything really. Spice up that workout and take it outside!

Do you have any new and exciting projects you are working on?

I am currently in the process of making a summer Central Park bootcamp through my new company Train McMeen (official launch date June 1) on weekend mornings.  We will use all the resources the park has to offer! It will be fun, creative and a great full-body workout that is incredibly affordable and for all ages!

Lindsey’s Bio:

Lindsey McMeen Before

Lindsey’s around 205lbs, her heaviest weight.

Originally from a small town in Wisconsin I was lucky enough to grow up with semi-organic parents who instilled good eating values in me from a very young age. Unfortunately when I got to college all of those values went out the window. I went from a 125lb muscle-packed gymnast and pole vaulter to a 205lb unhealthy, smoker who hadn’t seen the gym in over a year. Clearly something had to change, both mentally and physically.

After making the decision to get healthy I lost a total of 70lbs throughout my entire senior year by changing what I was eating and also running and attending fitness classes at the gym on campus. The running really took hold of me and I ended up running, at my highest, 70 miles a week! The psychological change was amazing – my outlook on life changed entirely. I was now excited to start my days rather than dread what they would bring me. Throughout the last six years my weight has fluctuated a little mainly due to lifestyle changes but more or less I have maintained a good, healthy weight and have completed two marathons. This last year I made the decision to pursue a career in health and fitness – it has been a passion of mine for (almost) my entire life and what a better way to live than doing something you love every single day, right? I received my personal training certification earlier this spring and am now a full-time kickboxing instructor and part-time personal trainer.

While I am still working on my own journey, and have a long way to go, it has been remarkable to help others with theirs. I could not imagine my life heading in any other direction, this is what I was meant to do and cannot wait to see what happens next!
